Scenting
The club’s first event of the year was a scent training session with Maree. As this was a new experience for many of our dogs, Maree guided participants through the basics of introducing scent work, using food to encourage the dogs to begin searching.
Scent training is a fun, low-impact activity that taps into a dog’s natural instincts. It provides excellent mental stimulation and encourages teamwork between handler and dog. Everyone had a great time—some dogs took to it immediately, while others took a little longer to figure things out.
Club member Christel Townley and her Labrador, Lucy, gave an impressive demonstration, successfully locating all three hidden scents. Dogs are trained to recognise specific odours, typically oils such as birch, anise, or clove.
This looks to be a fantastic sport suitable for dogs of all breeds, ages, and sizes.
